Malingkeng is located in the northwestern part of Qidu District, Keelung City. It is a place that combines beautiful natural scenery, mining history, and rural culture. The name "Maling" is believed to come from the language of the Ketagalan people and means "a sacred and beautiful place." Because the area is full of valleys and ravines, it later became known as "Malingkeng."
The development of Malingkeng reflects Keelung's transformation from a farming village to a prosperous mining area and finally into a peaceful ecological and recreational destination.
In its early days, farming and tea production were the main industries. Local residents cultivated crops in the valleys and built a traditional rural community. During the Japanese period, rich coal resources were discovered, and Malingkeng quickly became one of the most important mining areas in northern Taiwan. The mining industry attracted many workers and promoted the local economy. After the coal industry declined, residents returned to agriculture and developed other industries, allowing the area to regain its peaceful atmosphere.
Today, Malingkeng is well known for its hills, forests, streams, and waterfalls. Its rich natural environment provides a habitat for many kinds of plants and animals. The area also features several hiking trails where visitors can enjoy nature, observe wildlife, and appreciate the scenery. Nowadays, Malingkeng has become an important destination for ecological education and tourism in Keelung, allowing people to experience both its beautiful natural environment and its rich historical and cultural heritage.
