Ever noticed a small temple under a tree or on the side of the road? In fact, these small temples are one of the ways to define the land where people live in a traditional agricultural society, called the "five barracks", which are divided into central, eastern, western, southern, and northern barracks. "Five Barracks" is one of the important features of Taiwanese folk beliefs, relevant studies have identified that the "Five Barracks" are not only related to the scope of worship constructed by residents, but also have a clear relationship with the settlement space, that is, the "Five Barracks" intuitively reflect the boundary of the settlement, and establish an invisible protective boundary to protect the residents living in it.
