現今位於成功校區的總圖書館，其實是成功大學創校以來的第三代圖書館，該區原為成功操場，亦是成大校園中最早的戶外活動場地。1994年，作為二代總圖的擴建候選基地，成功操場於校務會議過後成為新總圖的建設地點，雖曾因經費、教職員連署等因素而有所延宕，但仍於1997年完成動土典禮，並在2001年正式落成使用。

The current Main Library on the Cheng Kung Campus is the third-generation library since the founding of NCKU. This area was originally Cheng Kung Playground, the earliest outdoor activity field on the NCKU campus. In 1994, as a candidate site for expanding the second-generation main library, Cheng Kung Playground was chosen as the new library's construction site after a university affairs meeting. Although delayed by funding and faculty petition factors, the groundbreaking ceremony was held in 1997, and the library was officially completed and used in 2001.
